A Mass Rock or Clais an Aifrinn in Irish) was a large stone used as an altar. The practise during the 17th century was a location for Roman Catholic Mass for the local population. The mass rock was typically as an isolated location. Priest hunters were employed in those times to locate and arrest priests under an Act of 1709.
In some cases the stone was taken from a nearby church ruin and transported to the new location. Because the activity was illegal at the time, the times of the mass was communicated verbally between those attending. The practice had waned by the end of the 17th century, when mass moved to churches. |
